American flight controllers are more and more seeking additional employment and calling in sick, as they remain on duty unpaid amid the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has announced.

"The controllers are becoming strained," the official informed Fox News on the weekend, as certain aircraft were halted on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

After the government shut down on 1 October, flight controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were told to keep doing their duties without pay.

But a number have been absent, leading terminals to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has exacerbated setbacks due to climate and other issues.

Over three thousand American flights were postponed on Sunday, and the secretary said he expects the situation to deteriorate further.

"I observe the stress," Duffy said in an interview on a weekend program, adding that he had met with several controllers to hear their concerns directly.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I work for Uber, am I able to find another source of earnings to cover expenses?'" he continued.

Duffy further mentioned that on the previous day 22 alerts at airfields indicated travel would be delayed due to a lack of workers - one of the highest since the closure began.

The US government shutdown entered its 26th day on the weekend, making it the second-longest halt in history.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that aviation regulators would reduce the number of planes in the air if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his interview, he declined to respond straightforwardly when questioned if it was secure to fly in the United States, and instead issued a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I need my controllers concentrating on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at their households," Duffy stated.

On that day, some planes were grounded at LAX due to employee deficits, causing disruption at the fifth-busiest airport in the country and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as other flights stretching north to the city of Oakland.

The Federal Aviation Administration alert went out at 8:45 AM local time on the weekend. Numerous trips were operating normally before noon.

Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, though, were postponed an average of over an hour due to staffing shortages, and the FAA indicated DFW, the second most active airport in the US, could experience problems from reduced staff in the afternoon.

The agency warned travelers in the state to check with carriers about updated departure times.

The issue precedes Game 3 of the championship, which is scheduled in LA on Monday evening, and approximately four weeks prior to the Thanksgiving break, one of the busiest periods to travel by air in the United States.

Pressure on American aviation contributed to ending a federal closure in two thousand nineteen. Back then, the shutdown had reached its fifth week and disrupted airline operations, including aviator instruction.

It prompted several flight controllers to remain absent on the same day on January 25, 2019, temporarily stopping movement at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

That same day, the former president, who at the time was in his initial presidency as president, agreed to sign a temporary funding measure, bringing an end to the government shutdown after 35 days.
