What We Know Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack
At least 16 lives lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have labeled a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, officials have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were admitted to hospital.
The victims have not yet been publicly named, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.
Below are the victims who are known to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Described as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the events before the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still under care, with five in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
